To start with, I would like to introduce myself to everyone. I am Scott Jones and have been a member of the Desoto County Republican Club for quite some time and a few weeks ago Amanda offered me the opportunity to take on this blog which I was honored to do. To be honest, I wish my first post didn't have to be something negative, but unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that our Republican representatives were sent to Congress in November with a mandate which has been ignored.

Last week, Amanda and I shared a couple of texts with each other and I told her that I wasn't really sure how I felt about the CR for the rest of the 2010 budget year. To some degree, it is small stuff in the big scheme of things. The supposed $61 billion in savings doesn't even cover the interest payments on our debt for 16 days. I have a hard time getting worked up for something so small, but Amanda assured me it was very important b/c of the riders that would defund Planned Parenthood, the EPA, etc. Well low and behold, not only did the deal only get to $38 billion in cuts, they dropped all the riders. With this budget, the Republican leadership has truly shown how weak they are. I say that with the understanding that the R's only control the House, but when you negotiate from a position of weakness, you get what you get. The leadership from the beginning made clear they were afraid of a shutdown, but all they had to do is pass a clean bill to fund the troops and essential services and dare anyone to vote against it. There is no way the Democrats would have not signed a clean troop funding bill with a shutdown looming. To do so, would have been a serious blackmark against them for every future campaign.

Now that we have all that out of the way, let me get on to the real thing that got me fired up enough about the CR to make my first post today. According to this Washington Post article today, the final CBO number on the CR to fund the goverment for the rest of the year comes out to a whopping $353 million dollars in cuts. Thats million with an "M" not billion with a "B". After additional spending that goes into the CR, we get less than 1% of those promised cuts. Is that leadership? I don't think so. I hope everyone will call our Representatives and Senators and let them know that this is unacceptable. This CR should be voted down. Its time to stop the games and make real cuts.

Tagert Wins MDOT Race

Mike Tagert of Starkville has defeated John Caldwell of Nesbit in Tuesday's runoff for Northern District Transportation Commissioner.

Complete, but unofficial, returns show Tagert, of Starkville and president of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Council, with about 53 percent of the vote against Caldwell, transportation director for the DeSoto County School District.

Unofficial returns show Tagert received 21,111 votes or 53 percent compared to Caldwell who garnered 18,737 votes or 47 percent.

'We did the best we could do,' a weary Caldwell said after the vote totals came in. 'We had seven people in this race when we started. Everybody put their best foot forward. There was no name calling. It was a very straight up race. I appreciate everyone's support.'

Caldwell carried his native DeSoto handily, along with Marshall, Tate, and Yalobusha counties but lost populous Lee County to Tagert by a 57 to 43 percent margin.

'I expected to win Lee County and I'm disappointed with that,' Caldwell said as vote totals showed he lost DeSoto County's rival county to the east. 'You win some and you lose some.'

Despite cold wet rainy weather on election day, DeSoto County managed a little more than 8 percent turnout, which was better than the 6 percent turnout in the Jan. 11 election.

Still, with 86,354 registered voters only 7,659 made it to the polls.

DeSoto County resident, John Caldwell, who is running for Northern District Transportation Commissioner received an overwhelming 84% of the DeSoto County vote in the January 11th election. Close behind him, Starkville resident, Mike Tagert, received the second highest portion of the vote district wide. The two will face a run off on Tuesday, February 1st.

Nunnelee Ahead of Childers In Poll

National Journal's Tim Sahd summarized a recent poll saying, "Nunnelee has enjoyed a very strong June, and that has apparently put him in very good shape for the fall."

The Tarrance Group, Governor Haley Barbour's pollster, conducted a poll for the Nunnelee for Congress Campaign surveying 303 likely voters between June 8-9 and found that Nunnelee is leading Congressman Travis Childers 50 percent to 42 percent with a margin of error of +/- 5.6 percent.

Nunnelee's advantage on the ballot is strengthened by voters who know both him and Childers. Among those voters who have heard of both candidates (69% of the sample), Nunnelee leads Childers by +21 points. Vote intensity is also on the side of Nunnelee. Among voters who are "extremely" likely to vote in the November election (64% of the sample), Nunnelee leads by +18 points.

The political environment among voters in this district heavily favors Nunnelee and the Republicans. On the generic ballot for Congress, Republicans maintain a significant +14 advantage. Fifty-four percent (54%) of district voters indicate that they would vote for the Republican candidate and only forty percent (40%) indicate they would vote for the generic Democrat candidate.

Almost six in ten district voters, fifty-seven percent (57%), indicate that they disapprove of the job that President Obama is doing as President, and a majority (50%) strongly disapprove. Just over one-in-three voters (36%) approve of the president's performance.

DCRC Hosts State Representatives in June

Mississippi Secretary of State, Delbert Hosemann, spoke to the DeSoto County Republican Club at its last regular monthly meeting held Tuesday, May 25th.

After being introduced by Hernando Mayor, Chip Johnson, Secretary Hosemann began by offering an update on "Voter ID" and other initiatives specifically undertaken by his office (i.e. imminent domain laws, corporate and LLC filings, charitable organization charter database clean-up). He also talked about his involvement in clean up work immediately following recent tornadoes in Mississippi, as well as efforts underway to contain the BP oil leak and protect Mississippi coastline, wildlife, enterprise and public health.

McGlowan Raises Eyebrows Again on Gallo Show

On February 25, Angela McGlowan spoke to Paul Gallo on his morning radio program. Among other issues, McGlowan answered questions about her controversial gun control comments made on her last program appearance. She also spoke briefly of her opponents, declaring that she would support Henry Ross should he win the June 1st primary. McGlowan denounced fellow Republican Alan Nunnelee; however, stating that she would not support him should he win the primary.

To date, Angela McGlowan continues to impress District 1 voters while alarming others with her comments and ideology. She will appear on the District 1 congressional Republican primary ballot along with Ross and Nunnelee; the winner will face incumbant, Travis Childers, in the November general election.

McGlowan Returns to Paul Gallo Show

Angela McGlowan, Republican candidate for congress, is scheduled to appear on the Paul Gallo Show this Thursday, February 25th. Paul Gallo hosts a radio program on Supertalk Mississippi which broadcasts in Hattiesburg, Tupelo, Oxford, Jackson, Brookhaven and other locales across the state.

McGlowan was a guest on Gallo's show in August 2009, and her position on gun control (specifically the requirement to report all guns in one's possession on income tax forms) brought about quite a reaction from conservative listeners. At her campaign kick-off event in Hernando recently, an attendee questioned her stance on guns in light of these comments. McGlowan responded saying she "misspoke" and at the time was not an elected official but instead a political analyst who simply played the devil's advocate "for ratings". She did; however, cite that she had been violently attacked in a mugging incident and believed that people should be able to carry a concealed weapon for the purpose of protection.

Nunnelee Campaign Seeks Volunteers

Alan Nunnelee's campaign team has organized a meeting to take place this Thursday, February 25th at 1:30 pm in Southaven for the purpose of discussing its campaign plan for DeSoto County. The meeting will be held at Nail-More Hall on Elmore Rd at Nail Rd (also known as "the rock building").

Senator Doug Davis has been deemed the County Coordinator for the team, but he is currently in legislative session in Jackson. If you're interested in working to help Doug and the rest of the team campaign for Alan Nunnelee here in DeSoto County, please make plans to attend the meeting. Reportedly, the team has a great plan and needs volunteers. The Republican primary election is June 1st. Alan Nunnelee will face Henry Ross and Angela McGlowan in that race.

DCRC January meeting a success!

Last night's DCRC meeting was a great success! Thanks to all who came, brought food, shared ideas and volunteered to get involved.

The DCRC extends its appreciation to the local elected officials who were kind enough to join us: Sheriff Bill Rasco, Horn Lake Mayor Nat Baker, Circuit Court Clerk Dale Thompson and Chancery Court Clerk Sluggo Davis.

Plus, it was great to host members of Generation Joshua, a group of homeschooled teens committed to advancing civic responsibility! (www.generationjoshua.org)

If you didn't make it, you missed a good time. With over 50 in attendance, the Club discussed its needs for the coming year as well as plans to ramp up efforts to promote and further Republican initiatives in DeSoto County. Several new committees - Hospitality, Fundraising and Research - were formed, and volunteers came forward! And the DCRC made plans to get together as a group socially, as well as host community events such as meet-the-candidate.

The DCRC will now meet the 4th Tuesday of each month! Please mark your calendars. Meetings will still be held at the Bank Plus Training Center building located at 7168 Moore Drive in Southaven and will begin at 6:30 pm. Make plans to catch the next meeting and even get involved!

The Voter ID initiative is not done yet! There are many more signatures required to meet the goal, and time is flying! DeSoto County numbers look good, but don't slow down. All signatures are valuable. Other parts of the state; however, need a lot of help...particularly District 2 (see the District 2 map at http://www.govtrack.us/congress/findyourreps.xpd?state=MS&district=2).

If you have friends and relatives in this district, please contact them right away and coordinate getting some petitions signed. If you're visiting friends or family during the Thanksgiving holiday, take petitions with you. If you go to a high school football game in this area, take petitions.

Simpson County, MS Democrats Switch to GOP

This was a BOLD move by these elected officials, a move which puts Republicans in the majority in county government in Simpson County. Among those who made the switch was the County Sherriff who said he did not leave the Democratic party, the Democratic party left him. According to Governor Hayley Barbour, people must no longer affiliate with the Democratic party just because 'they always have'. Instead, like these officials in Simpson County, folks need to work to uphold and preserve their conservative values by shifting focus and realigning with like-minded citizens.

Cap and Trade - Flying Under the Radar

In the midst of the healthcare bill hoopla, Democrats are working to push through a cap and trade bill in time for the Copenhagen summit in December. Following closely on the heels of ObamaCare, the Boxer-Kerry
Cap and Trade bill has been inconspicuously moving through
the Senate with a stealth goal to pass the bill before the
Copenhagen Summit this December!

refused to release a full economic analysis of the bill,

America."

Analysts believe the increased taxes and fees will cost the
average American household upwards of $1,600 to $3,000 or
more each and every year!

Making matters worse, scientists suggest Cap and Trade would
have no measureable benefit--except to the federal government.

HR 3962 Passes House - Affordable Health Care for America Act

House Bill 3962, otherwise known as the "Affordable Health Care for America Act" passed the House late Saturday, November 7, 2009. The bill needed 218 votes to pass and received 220.

One Republican voted in support of the bill, Louisiana's Anh Cao ("Republican" from New Orleans). Mississippi's Bennie Thompson (District 2) voted for the bill, as did two Democrats from Arkansas districts and one from Tennessee. Of those who opposed the bill were 39 Democrats (including Mississippi's Travis Childers, Gregg Harper and Gene Taylor) and 176 Republicans.

Jeremy Martin To Speak To DCRC In November

Jeremy Martin, North Mississippi Service Coordinator from the Secretary of State's office, is slated to speak to the DCRC at its next meeting (Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 6:30 pm).

Prepare to be enlightened...and a little agitated! Mr. Martin will explain Mississippi's election process, discuss voter habits and turnout and educate us on Mississippi voter law. Some of the information is truly shocking!

Your Voice: Childers' Vote on 72 Hr Review Period for Bills Questioned

Last week I called the Hernando MS office and Washington DC offices of Rep. Travis Childers, Democrat, MS District 1, asking if he had signed the discharge petition for H.Res.554, which amends the Rules of the House of Representatives to require that legislation and conference reports be available on the Internet for 72 hours before consideration by the House.Initially, staffers said they had not heard of the resolution, then that "It has already been adopted".

Finally, this morning, I was told that the House Rules already require a 72-hour wait before the House begins consideration of a bill. The congressman has not signed the discharge petition because there is no need for it. I trusted Rep. Childers and his staff to be truthful, but a wise man once said,"Trust, but verify."

I searched the THOMAS website at The Library of Congress to find its most recent status for H.Res.554. Go to this page:

Scroll down by hundreds and then by ones to find the resolution's entry.

There, I clicked on the link to H.Res.554 and selected the legislative language.The significant text forbids `a rule or order proposing awaiver of rule XIII 6(c) unless a question of consideration of therule is adopted by a vote of two-thirds of the Members voting, a quorum being present'. There are similar changes to Rule XXII 8 for 'AVAILABILITY OF CONFERENCE REPORTS AND AMENDMENTS REPORTED IN DISAGREEMENT.'

To me, the difference between needing a simple majority and needing amajority of two thirds to ignore the 72-hour requirement is a significant change to the rules. We can go back through the news since January to see how much difference it has made.

I still trust Rep. Childers and his staff to be truthful. After all,I finally got a direct answer to a yes-or-no question. He has not signed the discharge petition. However, it appears I cannot trust them to tell the whole truth.

Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1, we need folks to sit at a table and help get signatures on the Voter ID petitions at the Southaven Arena (Gun Show). We need volunteers to coordinate this effort, set up the table(s) and sit at the table to collect signatures! I need your help! The November meeting is slated to be one of the best yet, and I can't do it alone. Please sign up to help provide refreshments, come early to decorate, deliver the Invocation at the meeting, introduce a speaker at the meeting, take pictures, greet folks at the door and see people out as they leave. If you're willing to donate supplies, the DCRC needs postage stamps, construction paper, a package of ballpoint pens, a package of name tags, copy paper and copy services (if you have the ability to make black and white or color copies free). RWDA Christmas Dinner

The Republican Women of the DeSoto Area (RWDA) will hold its annual Christmas Dinner and Silent Auction on Monday, December 7, 2009, at Whispering Woods Conference Center. The Silent Auction will begin at 6:00 pm with dinner to follow at 7:00 pm. Senator Alan Nunnalee is the guest speaker.

This event is the single largest fund raiser for the RWDA. Proceeds benefit the RWDA and help further Republican initiatives. The RWDA is an active and influential group, and your support is vital. Please make plans to attend this event. It's going to be a great evening!

Tickets are $40.00 each and may be purchased from any one of many Republican Women. Please e-mail desoto4gop@gmail.com should you wish to buy tickets, and one of the ladies will contact you right away. This is not a ladies-only event, so come as a couple, invite your families or escort a friend. All are welcome!

Should you wish to donate items for the Silent Auction, you may also send an e-mail for more information on how to contribute to this effort. Household items, art work, jewelry, purses, handmade items, homemade confections and other desirable goodies are appreciated.

Next DCRC Meeting - UPDATE!!

The next DCRC meeting will be held Tuesday, November 10, 2009, 6:30 pm, at the Bank Plus Training Center building in Southaven. Please note the new time and location. The Club has invited Jeremy Martin, North Mississippi Service Coordinator from the Secretary of State's office, to be guest speaker. You DO NOT want to miss this meeting!

(Due to a scheduling conflict, Senate President Pro Tem Billy Hewes is not available to speak to the DCRC in November. We hope that Senator Hewes will be able to join us at later date.)

The Bank Plus Training Center building is located at 7168 Moore Drive in Southaven. From Goodman Road turn onto the street immediately next to Burger King (west of Airways Blvd) . This is Moore Drive. You'll see Comfort Suites on the left, and directly across the street (on the right) just beyond TCBY is the Bank Plus Training Center. It's clearly marked...you can't miss it!

DeSoto County Republican Club Blog

Wow...we have a blog! One centralized place reserved especially for members and guests of the DeSoto County Republican Club sounds great to me, and I hope you'll help us make it successful. I am so proud to be a part of this energized group of folks who are passionate about making our communities, this state and our country the best that it can be.

Your comments, suggestions, questions and concerns are welcome here. But as always, I graciously ask that you follow the "pool rules" to make our blog the interesting, thought-provoking, sometimes funny, open line of communication that it can be. Here goes...

1) Our Club is cohesive - we lift up fellow Republicans. We are not devisive - we do not gossip here, and we don't run down fellow Republicans (even if they deserve it, because God bless us, we all get off track sometimes!). :)

2) Our Club seeks to understand then to be understood. We play fair, disagree respectfully and in a public forum such as this, we think before we speak. :)

3) Our Club is a team. No one person shall post and post, thus flooding the blog with his own comments. Each voice is valued, and if the only voice we ever heard was mine (or yours), we'd all be bored to tears. :)

4) Our Club is full of Go-Getters! Participate in discussions, post your comments, add your suggestions! An empty blog is a sad, lonely blog nobody will ever visit or benefit from. So enjoy!
